Gifted Hands

The film is centered around one of Dr. Carson’s most important and career-launching surgeries, the separation of conjoined twins, and also recounts the events in his life leading up to this moment. Despite the high risks associated with such a surgery, Dr. Carson successfully performed the surgery. This movie teaches us that no obstacle is too big to become a doctor, the importance of challenging ourselves, and that “Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them.”

Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Actor in a Supporting Role, Jerry Maguire, 1996) stars in this true story about a renowned brain surgeon who overcame obstacles to change the course of medicine forever. Young Ben Carson didn’t have much of a chance. Growing up in a broken home amongst poverty and prejudice, his grades suffered and his temper flared. And yet, his mother never lost her faith in him. Insisting he follow the opportunities she never had, she helped to grow his imagination, intelligence and, most importantly, his belief in himself. That faith would be his gift – the thing that would drive him to follow his dream of becoming one of the world’s leading neurosurgeons.

Ben Carson, even with his skills with a surgeons knife, also knows failure, struggle, and life sorrow that comes from a human inability to control every aspect of living. But he never stops trying, and he gets support from some teachers, mom, brother, wife, classmates, and many others along the way. But in the end, it is one man’s choice to do his very best, make his life “shine and sparkle” just like his mother did to floors while scrubbing and cleaning for others.

This is one powerful, inspirational, biography of one life overcoming hardship and of becoming an overachiever. Dr Carson has a goodness within always striving to help others. You will be glad you watched, regardless of your own race, religion, or educational attainment.
